Heater with hops - Needed or not?

Post by jaycee » Mon Mar 12, 2007 10:14 pm

Hello - I have just moved my second brew into my secondary fermenter.
It's a Wherry bitter and has been fermenting for 7 days .
My question is -
Do i need to put the heater back into the vessel or will it be fine now .
The room is not that cold.
Will a brew heater be safe in the vessel now i have added 25 grams of dry hop goldings to the secondary?
Thanks in advance.
Jaycee.

If its in the secondary I wouldn't bother. Fermention is all but done, just conditioning so little monsters don't need the heat. And just another chance for infection to get in.

How long you leaving it to dry hop by the way? (I presume your secondary is a fermentation vessel not a barrel.)

I agree, no need to keep the beer at fermentation temps. Although I like to leave the beer at room temperature to condition for a few weeks before cooling it down.

Yeah if I have it in the barrel I do the same to build up co2 but if it's in a fermenter no point, save the sugars till it's barrelled

Well it's a bit of an experiment.
I brewed a fixby gold that came out great, but i love love that hoppy aroma and taste that you get with cask ales.
So i thought i'd give it go to hop it up a bit.
After i posted a thread about what i had and what i wanted, with some advice from others i settled with -
15 grams of fuggles pellets boiled for 10 mins then added to the fermenter.
25 grams of goldings dry hopped into secondary.

I still have brupaks hop aroma tablets.

Any advice would be great. i plan to keep experimenting with bits , then move on from kits ... and so on.

Also - How long do you think i should leave the goldings in for?

Thanks in advance Jaycee
