can i add finings at this late stage?

Post by BIGTRACTOR » Wed Mar 14, 2007 8:12 pm

hi, i've had a youngs scottish heavy bitter kegged for a couple of weeks now in a budget bottom tap barrel. there is good pressure there, but the beer is still very cloudy (i've tilted the barrel backwards slightly away from the tap).

i've just got through my coopers ipa, and my smugglers has only just gone into the barrel, so i havent got any beer to drink :( and my pledge of not buying off licence beer or wine has reached a month now ! - i am reluctant to break it!)

i didn't add any finings to the scottish heavy, so i wondered (and i know its being a bit impatient) but could i add gelatine to it now, and re-carbonate just to speed things along a bit? :?

Nothing at all stopping you. However you'll have to wait 2 or 3 days before drinking it after fining the beer

Putting it somewhere slightly cooler would help, but then again you don't really want to move the barrel to upset the yeast sediment :?

Yeast is harmless remember, nothing wrong with drinking cloudy beer

I wouldn't bother, if it tastes ok drink it
If its been in the keg for a couple of weeks it'll be nearly clear I would guess, opening a sealed vessel and making additions at this point is risking infection :(
If the cloudyness bothers you buy a stone tankard
Oh, and the real solution to your problem it to brew more so that you don't run out :=P

How many pints have you had from the keg?
I thought I had the same problem recently but after 6-7 pints the beer was crystal clear.

If it were hazy and there's no rush, I'd either wait till it dropped clear - which it will usually do even if it takes a month or more - or just drink it.

I have a similar problem in that a recently kegged beer is still pretty hazy, and it needs to be clear by 27th March for a beer club meeting. There's no way I'm taking a cloudy beer to that. There's enough ridicule at the meeting as it is!! So, if it's still hazy a week before I'm going to crack it open, fine it, and close it up. As long as the finings are sterile and not aerated and the stirring is done carefully, it should be ok.

:D i'm brewing as fast as i can tubby! :D
just had a pint of it and it tastes really good, cloudiness doesn't bother me, but i was unsure whether it might give me a) bad wind (which i usually have anyway and/or b) the flying shits!

reckon its worth the risk anyway! :o :D  8)
