*#$!ing spraymalt

Post by inthedark » Wed Apr 04, 2007 2:05 pm

I seem to be losing a fair amount of spraymalt to lumps whenever I use it - just made up a Coopers IPA kit with all spraymalt last night.

I've tried adding to cold water, lukewarm water, warm and hot - always the lumps :x

Last night went for starting cold and heating gently - had to get the hand blender out in the end to remove them.

It there a knack to this, or does everyone just suffer like this? Life is definitely too short...

Are you adding the spraymalt slowly and stirring as you add?

Yep. Actually it seems to clump up even if you breathe on it!

Does it make any difference whether you add water to it or add it to the water? Also, does it help to have more or less water ?

I add it to BOILING water. It seems to do best with that, in my experience. I get the water boiling hard, then switch off the heat and immediately shake it in, stirring with a slotted serving spoon. Good luck.

Might be practical if I already have to boil up 2L of water to mix the kit though. I used my cheapo 8L stock pot for this yesterday, so could just as easily mix the spraymalt into that if it'll avoid the lumps. What do you think?

I've only used spraymalt for starters, but I've never had a problem. I generally add it to a warm pan of water, stirring as I go.

Good plan. I'll give it a go.

I don't think there's any answer to stir - stir - stir - stir...

I think it's a bit easier if you take DaaB's advice and add the spraymalt to water which is well off the boil - I add the spraymalt to kit brews after adding a little cold water now, and rinse the bag out (carefully!) with a little boiling water... because I'm a tight ar$e...

It does - just keep stirring, all the lumps go eventually.

Man I have no problems with DME. I just keep stirring.

The first time I used DME I made the BIG mistake of using a balloon whisk.
I shall not be doing that again, the technique I use now is stirring and stirring, ultimatly it will dissolve. 8)
