Hydrometer readings - again.
Hydrometer readings - again.
Hi again. I've just taken a final reading from my alcopo (lemonade) and it's starting gravity was 1044 and it's now at 1010. Can anyone tell me what the abv is? What's the formula for working it out so I know next time.
I've been to several places to find out and they all seem to differ. The way I did it was SG/FG X 7.5 = 7.75% abv
Is that right?
Thanks.

An online calc if you also want to include temperature correction against your readings.....

Here's how I did it.
3 lemmons (cut in half and squeezed)
1x 5 litre bottle of asda mineral water
500g caster sugar - don't use this, I wish I hadn't
500g Fruit fructose - probably ok to use
wine yeast
yeast nutrient
Basically, this is a simple to make recipe.
Squeeze the juice, remove any bits, add sugar, fructose + juice to 4.5 litres of the 5 litre water bottle and shake like hell.
Mix yeast in a bit of water to rehydrate then add to the bottle and shake again.
Leave top on loose to avoid nasties entering bottle and c02 to escape.
Leave for about a week at 22C then transfer to fridge in either the main bottle or pet bottles.
My initial SG was 1044 and it's now done at 1010, so according to the above formula it's about 4.5%.
Given that it's wine yeast it may still go further but to be honest the tste isn't too good due to using sugar. If you do this recipe i'd use plain dextrose (1kg)
I've just set a ginger beer/ale away using dextrose and ale yeast so I hope that turns out better - it realy smells like ginger beer ! That had an SG of 1092 @ 25C so if it gets to the 1010 like the lemonade...10.9% abv !! Get in!!
Cheers,
Steve.
