Brewing Lager Yeast at Ale Temperatures?

Steam beer, jadies and mentalmen.

Do you find it gives a crisper finish than, say, a Coopers APA or Blonde yeast?

I haven't the wherewithal to make a real lager at lager temps, would it be worth my while to brew a pale/light ale with lager yeast at 20 deg plus?

The San Fran Steam Beer is lovely I must say.

I'd say "no", lager yeast can be really funky in higher temps. Unless it's California/SF Lager.

If you want lager-like flavours from top fermenting yeast, then use Kölsch or Altbier yeast.

Cheers Z, good advice.

There are only a few 'lager' kits that use true yeast. Muntuns, youngs, edme, the range, wilkos, betterbrew, geordies and most of coopers (euro and pils excluded) have modified ale yeast. None are suitable for cool brewing.

Plenty to choose from.

Coopers heritage lager is the best lagerlikey I've brewed.

Steam beer yeast would work. Wyeast claims it's 2124 can be used at ale temperature with good results. Some lager yeasts are listed as good up to high 50s and one of those might also work.
I'm just here for the beer.

S189 and Maurilager dry yeasts are true lager yeasts which can be pushed up to 20C or so.

Any yeast will happily ferment up to 35c. Question is, would we humans enjoy the product of such fermentation? ;)

Wyeast 2112 is the Anchor Steam Beer yeast. I have used it to make an English Steam Beer using Goldings and Fuggles fermented at 20C and the result was clean and slightly sweet. I have also used it in a Brown Porter to good effect.

Fair call, I'll re-phrase; S189 and Maurilager dry yeasts are true lager yeasts which can be pushed up to 20C or so without overtly detrimental effect.
