First Brew - First Post

Post by Barn Stormer » Fri Jun 07, 2013 6:14 pm

Hi All
Just part way through my first brew, Coopers Aussie Lager, all going well but a couple of questions.
I brewed this kit to 21 litres and added some hop tea, OG 1045 after 12 days down to 1008, its been that for the last 2 days. Its tastes OK but its still cloudy although I can see a difference from top to bottom of the FV. Is it OK to bottle it or should I leave it in the FV to clear further. Is there any advantage to syphoning it into a secondary FV, would this help it clear or will it just clear in the bottles?

I can spend ages just reading through all the topics on here, all v interesting!
Thanks

Congrats, and welcome to Jim's!

You can do it either way. It sounds like clarity is important to you. If so, then yes, there is a benefit to transferrig the beer to a secondary ferementor, patiently allowing time for more yeast to drop-out before bottling. This additional bulk-aging/conditioning also benefits the flavour, smoothing out any flaws, etc.

As you stated, it would eventually drop-out in the bottle too, but you would risk unsettling it and mixing it back into solution later when pouring from the bottle.

Leave it a bit longer! Good things come to those who wait!

Well !! Bottled this on 14/6 and placed in warmish cupboard. The pet bottles firmed up nicely and it got the better of me. I knew I should wait longer but I put one in the fridge for a couple of hours earlier on today. Primed with 1.5 Coopers tablets, they came with the kit, and its good! Nice head and good carbonation. Nice hoppy taste from the hop tea I added. Already well pleased with my first brew and it should get better if I can keep my hands off it. Better than I buy from Tescos.

PS Its as clear as a bell

Well done, mate. That's much better than I did on my first brew. Of course, I didn't have this website to rely upon... :)

Hi BS. Welcome to Jim's.

What hops did you use?

Hi I made a hop tea with Hallertau hops, steeped in just off boling water in the can for 15 mins. As it was my first kit I cannot tell how much difference it made but it certainly tastes OK.

Coopers Lager kits are excellent - just put into bottles for about 5-6 weeks.

A long time but worth the wait.

Good luck.

BTW - welcome to Jim's. A great place.

If it was Hallertau Hersbrucker then good choice, Saaz are not the only hops
If it was the Pilsener or Euro lager kit then bloody good choice. I wish my first brew had been like that instead of the eleventh. =D> =D>
