Dry hopping - how to sanitise the hops?

Post by Stonch » Thu May 31, 2007 9:36 pm

Guys, we're about to dry hop a bitter (with some Bramling Cross Fivetide sent us, cheers mate!)

Surely I need to sanitise those hops though? What to do? :?:

Do we need to quickly boil them (quickly so as not to boil out much flavour)?

Yep.. they're naturally antiseptic (hence why traditional IPAs were dry hopped heavily; to act as a preservative).

Boil the bag though, and a weight if you're using one...

Cheers, Fivetide, I followed the tips in your private message and did that. Me and Dave scratching around in the churchyard gravel for perfectly smooth and non-porous pebbles was a new low!

Here is a photo taken into the barrel as we were syphoning the beer into the barrel, with the dry hop bag and syphon tube both visible (we're using the muslin bag you kindly sent us for the other batch we have on the go - a small amount f hops in the mild):
