Sediment

Post by Barn Stormer » Fri Aug 23, 2013 4:37 pm

Hi I have done 5 kits now, couple of Coopers, Festival IPA ,Wherry and a Muntons bitter and I have not had any sediment whatsoever in any of the bottles. So far I have bottled it all. Is this a good or bad thing? All the bottles have conditioned well with good carbonation and a good head. Why no sediment?

cheers

You will get less sediment if the beer is left in the fermenting vessel long enough for it to drop fairly clear before bottling. The cloudier the beer when bottling the more sediment will collect at the bottom of the bottle as it clears. If your beer is carbonated and doesn't have sediment in the bottles I would say that's a good thing.

Thanks TFWilf I was worried that I may be leaving it too long in the FV. Does sediment serve any useful purpose? is it just a by product of secondary fermentation. I do tend to be very careful when siphoning into the bottling bucket and probably leave a bit more in the FV than some.

Thanks

If it looks good, tastes good and has carbonated then I would say you've got your brewing spot on.
