Kit yeast, expiry query

Post by Dabooka » Wed Mar 12, 2014 11:17 pm

Hi chaps, I have a quick question about kit yeast.

After a hiatus of a couple of years I've finally managed to get around to setting up my fermenting fridge and STC ( :D ) and am right keen to get a brew on the go; my attempts a few years ago we're spoiled by problems maintaining temperatures.

Whilst blowing the dust of the fridge I found inside a Woodfordes Werry and a Coopers lager kit which I forgot about. Now they've both expired and I've nothing to lose in giving them a go, but will I better off getting new yeast in? If so, is Wilco's any good for these? I'll be doing the Werry first, but despite a two - three year gap, all of a sudden waiting a few days for a delivery is too long!

I hope this fridge fixes things.......

By all means use a fresh sachet of yeast, toss the others in the bin.

Well I know the missus has had to chuck bread yeast before so figured mine would be done too. And is Wilco's ale yeast (or whatever they do) be alright for my wherry?

Thanks for your help

From memory Wilko sell a Gervin Ale yeast which is (I believe) very similar or possibly identical to "Nottingham" yeast. Irrespective of what the Wilko's yeast is, it works and should be fine for your Wherry.

As you have a brew fridge it would probably be worth getting a true lager yeast for the Coopers kit. I'm sure there will be someone along soon who can advise on that (lager is just not my thing).

Happy brewing,

Ian.

Fermentis W-34/70 is a very good dry lager yeast IMO, but it certainly won't be found in your local Wilko's.

Cheers

Cheers chaps, that settles that then; Wilco's for my ale yeast and Google for the lager.

:D

I appear to have yet another stuck Wherry #-o

I've given it a gentle stir yesterday when it read .024 (two days running) and a check this afternoon looks like around .022, so a negligible change if any in my book. The only thing I think I can try is to add the original yeast and see if that kicks it off (I'll make a sugar water starter first, just to see if it is at least alive).

Any problems with this? Or any alternatives?

Cheers chaps :-)

Much better to just rehydrate the yeast in plain water, you end up with a much healthier yeast population

Here's me thinking you mixed it with sugar or something! You learn something new everyday.... :D

I'll get it made up and chuck it, nothing to lose now....
