Which one?

Post by soupdragon » Thu Apr 14, 2016 10:01 pm

Hi all

Got Sunday after next pencilled in as a brew day. Not got enough time for a full grain brew so will be doing one of those premium kits. Got a Razorback kit as a Xmas gift and I was well impressed with it.
So................
I was thinking of one of the following. Youngs APA, IPA (but with half of the dextrose), the amber ale or a Festival Pilgrims Hope.
Question is which one? I love those fruity hops so they all should do the job but does one stand out from the rest?

All input welcomed :D

Cheers. Tom

How would you describe the flavour? Tropical fruits, good old citrus or heavy on the pine? And is the aroma equally as impressive?

The apa has bee described by some as.similar to sierra nevada.

I think the ipa tastes similar to lagunitas ipa.

Had Sierra Nevada pale ale but not had the IPA.
Am I the only person who isn't blown away by SN pale ale, or am I missing something?

I think freshness is the issue. The bottles we get here just aren't fresh enough so it loses a lot. I've had a pint before from a relatively fresh keg and it was delicious, but most bottles I try don't match up.

That, and each to their own of course.

The recipe is widely available, so give it a go for a fresh version and you'll likely be surprised.

It is on my list of brews to do so I'll get around to it eventually.

I'll see what takes my fancy this weekend. They all sound rather pleasant though.

I love the Razorback. It's the only kit I've done more than once.
I've recently kegged the Youngs APA and like that too. It's seems a little more rounded with some malt coming through, than the razorback, but still just as good, well.... nearly..

Let us know what you think.

I'll be doing the American amber ale when I get home on Sunday.
Will report back in a few weeks when I have a cheeky snifter at kegging time

Guess who forgot to post an update?

The amber was a pleasant beer but not as good as the razorback.
Anyway, I had a weekend away in Nottingham with the Mrs a couple of weeks ago and popped into the purecraft bar. Wasn't sure what to have so asked for suggestions from the staff. I was pointed in the direction of Lagunitas IPA on draught and was totally blown away by it. Such a complex flavour. Now purely by chance someone had gifted me the IPA so if that's anything like Lagunitas I'll be well impressed. I've managed to find two recipes for it so will have to try one of those too sometime :)

Cheers. Tom
