Erm... I think fermentation may have stopped!

I had fairly good activity in the fermentation bin for 2 or 3 days, then it slowed a fair bit, and today it looks to be almost stopped. My hydrometer hasn't arrived yet due to postal strikes I suspect, but there are no bubbles breaking the surface to speak of.

Do you think this would be a good time to keg, or should I leave it a bit longer... its had getting on for only 5 days which seems a bit on the quick side, but the beer doesn't have an overly sweet taste to it (infact it doesn't have all that much of a taste of anything to it at the moment - deeply inoffensive beer!)

The keg is currently soaking in sterilising solution in preparation, along with the syphon hose... I was thinking I should probably give it another day first though.....

Any thoughts?

If you press your ear to the side of the Fermenter(FV), you will be able to hear whether there is any CO2 activity
I would leave it a bit longer though, but at 5 days it is possible that the fermentation is complete. If you leave it till 10 days or there abouts, a good deal of yeast will drop out of suspension and ultimatly give you a clearer and cleaner tasting beer.

Certainly not much doing in there - I could hear it quietly yesterday afternoon when I last checked! It is very, very cloudy though so perhaps give it a few days! I need to find out which days I am working away from home next week, if it is middle to end of week I will probably keg before I head down south (down south being the Lake District to me!)

I am guessing as this is such a lightish beer it isn't going to need a HUGE amount of maturation... so I figure that I had best get the next kit and a second keg ordered up next week too :D

Well, just got a potential big job enquiry locally (Fife) so shall not be needing to head south next week, which is a result! Means that I can leave the beer a few more days without worry!

I have also just ordered up some additional equipment and the next 2 kits, I was only going to get the Coopers Pale, but to make it up to free delivery I thought I had best get my third kit ordered at the same time

Righty - moved it through to my newly constructed "home brew cupboard" in the office - so I can swing around in the chair following a difficult client phone call and grab myself a pint!

Well, not yet - it is still in the primary bucket for the moment, though the barrel is clean and sterile (should be okay for a couple of days without re-steralising I would thing :?: ) ready for the filling in a couple of days time. The yeast is certainly starting to clear - well it was until I moved the thing, so it will have to start again now I should imagine - so I should hopefully get some nice clear beer!

The room is north facing, the heating is off and the cupboard is generally quite cool compared to the rest of the house. Its about the best I can do unfortunatly - think I will have to save any lager making for the winter months and perhaps perform the brewing and conditioning in the open air to keep the temperatures down :)
