I want to try and turn a 5 quid Geordie kit into a John Smith's. So I thought:
Geordie Yorkshire bitter kit
500gm of the Geordie Beer Enhancer (can up this to 1kg, but don't really want that much sugar, don't have any DME left).
To add a bit of malt, darken it, and make it more creamy:
90minute mash of:
1200gm pale malt (all I have left.)
200gm flaked barley (to make it more creamy and bulk out the pale malt.)
100gm wheat malt (to help with head retention + bulk out the pale malt a bit.)
100gm crystal malt (should I add more? Or remove it?)
150gm chocolate malt (A bit more do you think? The Geordie Yorkshire is quite light if I remember rightly.)
30 minute boil of the above malts with 20g Golding in about 6 litres of liquid - but can go as high as 14 litres for the boil if needs be.
I also have some flaked maize, and can up the flaked barley if needs be, but I am not sure how much adjuncts I can safely add at maximum. I assume this is around the 20% mark?
So, what do you guys think? Do you think it will turn out like John Smith's?
John Smith's bitter
Hmmm, don't know if that would work with the Geordie Yorkshire kit though. It's quite sweet if I remember.norman wrote:Don't think so,John Smiths beers are mostly Pale Malt Black Malt(1%)
Maybe I should use the whole bag of BKE then!and a whopping amount of SUGAR(15%)

If I can get something that just 'looks' like a John Smith's. Then that will be close enough!
