Making your own kit from an AG brew

Post by BrewStew » Tue Aug 14, 2007 10:49 am

As my mind does when i get a dull moment at work, i was pondering about brewing and wondered:

Is it possible to reduce an AG wort down to a syrup like that of a kit to use later, or for example so you can easily post it to a friend whos only a kit brewer for him to enjoy your masterpiece?

god knows why i thought it, as it's probably best to go ahead and ferment it right away, but i still wonder.

LME/hopped kit extract is produced by evaporating under a vacuum to avoid having to heat it too much which would drive off the hop flavours and aromas and cause caramelisation.

I very much doubt that reducing the wort with the methods available as a home brewer (i.e. boiling it) would produce a very good result. :(

I guess in theory you could just boil it until all the water has evaporated, the results of this would be unknown mind

Would you not just be better off sending them a bottle of the finished shah-bang?

Why not just cool down the wort and seal that up. Fresh wort kits are quite popular down under, a few home brew shops sell them. You get all the advantages of an AG beer without doing the mash/sparge yourself - just pitch the yeast and go as normal.
