Help needed to dry hop a Woodfordes Nelson's Revenge, please

Post by mikeyt » Thu Aug 16, 2007 2:02 pm

I've currently got a Nelson's Revenge in primary. It is now 5 days old, and the gravity has fallen from 1.045 to 1.015 in that time, of which I am very pleased!

I'm going to be putting in into the secondary, for 2 weeks, before I bottle it. I want to dry hop it, but am not too sure how, or how much. This is what I am currently thinking - is it right, is it wrong, is it too much, is it too little? Thanks in advance for all the information that will come!! :D

It's a 36 pint kit. I've got a 100g vacuum sealed packet of fuggles hops. I am intending on taking about 25g of these, boiling them up for 10 minutes in a small amount of water, and then putting it in the secondary bucket. In two weeks time, when it's bottling time, and the beer gets moved to my bottling bucket, I intend on removing them. This seem ok? And what is the best way to store the rest of the hops? In the freezer until needed next time?

Thank you. :D

I recently dry hopped a Woodfordes Wherry in Secondary. I put 25g hops into a nylon bag and tied a glass weight to it to sink it. I left it in for a week before removing the bag and bottling. While it has added alot of aroma to tbe beer there is a slight grassy taste off the beer. The next time I dry hop I will only leave the bag in secondary for about 4 days as I think a week is overdoing it a bit, maybe using 20g instead of 25g also.

Try leaving the hops in the keg for longer(or until its drunk  ) and the grassyness will go.

mikeyt you dont need to boil the hops when dry hopping just put them in loose!

Add little hot water over the hop will help release the aromatics (don’t boil) add the hops and water to the keg/secondary for two weeks
