Oh dear...too much water

Well, I started off with the best of intentions thinking that this time I would not make any mistakes. I sterilised everything I could lay my hands on, treated the water and even had the audacity of boiling some of the wort with Hallertau hops to try and enhance the pilsner kit a little  8)

Anyhow, I think I was took busy concentrating on everything else that I kind of forgot about the amount of water and instead of adding 17.5 litres of cold water I added almost 20

In addition, there was water in the sugar solution I added (400g light spray malt and 600g brewers sugar).

I didn't realise my mistake until I measured the OG at 1030

I started this kit last Saturday, and measured the SG tonight at 1012... question is can I add more spraymalt to boost both the body and alcohol content - perhaps another 500g light spray malt ?

in theory adding more malt should do it,

to my working, and its late and I am tired you are 2.5l over

if 25l take 1000g extra thats 100g you would need to make up. but you need to make up for the kit itself (assumes its a 1.5kg kit) as well, so (1500/25)*2.5 = 150g + 100g

so... 250g of DME should sort it?

someone tell me if I am wrong

Cheers Nick,

I picked up more light spraymalt today on the way home. I removed a small amount of liquer and measured the SG (1008). I used this to dissolve the 250g additional spraymalt in and then placed it carefully back in to the fermenter.

What I wasn't expecting was the instanteous reaction  and subsequent massive foam head.....wow, what a reaction !!!

Its all good fun :D :D

yes I sometimes add a small amount of DME to give the brew a kick in the arse when its stuck around the usual 1018-1020 mark and it goes crazy!

I suspect the instant reaction is just down to CO2 coming out of solution when stirring in the fresh extract. Those little yeasties aren't that quick :)
Next Up : Something for the summer
