Yeast starter kit
Yeast starter kit
I've mixed up my bottle of yeast starter at 6.30pm. I've not opened the 2 brupack tins yet, would I be best waiting until tomorrow morning or could I pitch it later this evening and get the same result?
Have you just added it to a little water? Were you using the yeast you got with the kit? Either way I can't see how pitching it now would be a problem if there's some apparent life to it (or at least has been). The idea is to wake the yeast up a little so that it goes into the wort ready to get to work in reproducing prior to the fermentation proper (I think... aerobic to anaerobic respiration?), anyway the 'starter' (although I think it's just a rehydration in this case) is just to make sure the yeast goes in ready and to see that the yeast is actaully fit for purpose.
Put simply, people pitch the dried yeast 'as is' and don't encounter any problems, by rehydrating it you're increasing the odds in your favour, so you don't need to leave for a long time or anything, in fact you may actually lose out by leaving it too long.
Edit: was it dried yeast in a sachet you were using or a liquid yeast? If liquid you may need to ignore everything I just said

Well my first ever brew is under way (Fixby Gold). I pitched the yeast last night about 10pm and was awakened at 5am to a steady drip, drip, drip. As I have the FV in the bedroom (away from little hands) I could hear drops hitting the laminated floor.
I initially thought it was the tap with a slight leak, on closer inspection I noticed it was the head on the yeast had expanded and was spilling over the gap I'd left in the edge of the lid. As I was pitching it last night I was a bit concerned that 23L in a 25L bin only left an inch or so from the top.
I've put a towel over the lid and hanging over the edge so it soaks up and drips coming from the edge, to be fair the dripping in minimal its 10am and the towel is barely wet.
Lessons learnt for next time? Buy a 33L FV and ferment in that, dont fit a tap and siphon into my 25L bin when I want to bottle.
Also wait a good 10 minutes after pitching to do the OG reading, I got dizzy trying to follow the hydrometer round and round the swirl of the wort!
Is it OK to either scoop some of the foam of the top or siphon some wort out via the tap to stop this over-flowing problem?

Leave it alone it will die down pretty soon.

I'll leave it be then! It hasnt expanded any further. Yep, the starter worked a treat Dan, it was foaming up less than 5 hours after pitching. I was a bit concerned when I re-hydrated the yeast as I didnt have a spare jug. I used a sterilised glass but the surface area was alot less than a jug so some of the yeast just sat on top and didnt re-hydrate. When I tipped it in the bottle with the wort it soon got working though.
Yes I bought a bag of Light Spray Malt. I need some for my next brew, a Ginger Beer recipe that I got off the net somewhere.dan_olo wrote:Did you use spraymalt for the starter as per DaaB's instructions? Will have to add some to my next H&G order...
I messed up with the Sodium Metbisulphate. The instructions on the tin says 6 teaspoon for a litre of water, by accident I mixed the same quantity with a pint of water
