The bits look like flakes of rust. Don't know whether its spent yeast or something?!
I forgot to mention the smell. It smells really nice no adverse aroma, can smell the goldings and fuggles hops

Sorry about all this I always get in a state when brewing - for obvious reasons!

I suspect the bits on the top are spent yeast or something. It smells ok as well no foul smell, can smell the fuggles and goldings aroma.

Apologies for all this, i get myself in a state when i'm waiting for a brew to turn out. Mainly due to my poor track record!

I've been giving your problem some thought and investigation. Vwp is a chlorine based sanitizer and you are rinsing out with your local water which, I beleive, is very hard and high in chlorine itself.
There is no science behind my musings but can I suggest that next time you try a non-chlorine based sanitizer or treat a batch of water with a campden tablet to remove all chlorine and chloramines prior to rinsing equipment???
I'm probably barking up the wong tree but it seems to me that you have a whole lot of chlorine going on down there.....

Interesting stuff! I've just ordered some coopers stout and a brewers choice trad ipa, so I will try with this in mind.
I have some sodium metabisulphate which i beleive is the same as campden tablets. I can use thing to treat the water can't I? I have also ordered some Iodophor also. So will see how this goes!
Thanks for your time
