can i just ask, what are the difference between boiling hops in a little of the wort and dry hopping? and under what circumstances would you use either method?

Boiling the hops in wort will add flavour and a little extra bitterness.
Dry hopping adds mainly aroma 8)

Right then, Easterns moved to another fermentor and 20g Brambling Cross added in a mesh bag weighed down with a sterlisied shot glass (hadn't got any marbles) leaving it now for 5 days (Thursday). One question, the dried hops smell like old socks (is that normal) ? :D :?:

I don't know about the smell of Brambling Cross but the smell of Fuggles is quite like cheesey feet

Well OB i've followed your advice with regard to dry hopping with bramling cross and the beer has now had the hops removed and has been priming in the keg for the last 3 days, lots of pressure now. Just had a cheeky taster and WOW, i see what you mean about the hop aroma smacking you in the face and the taste is great it's really given the beer a nice floral edge! Cheers for the advice, can't wait for it to clear and mature! Looking forward to this one around late May / early June. =D>

I cant believe you are letting it sit for another 2-3 months :roll:I bottled 8 from my last brew(using Brambling cross in the secondary) and i was disapointed to find that the hop aroma didnt stay as long in the bottles as it did in the keg!!But i am a bit of a Hop-head \:D/

BC is a very appley/floraly hop that isnt used to its full potential in HB terms O:) O:)

Glad you like the taste and aroma of a very much underated hop :-k :-k

The best pint will be the last one you pour!!after that you will be wishing that there was more to come

If you can leave for 4 weeks or more(after kegging) then it will be really scrumptious

Brambling Cross isnt used as a bittering hop,but as aroma and for dryhoppping it has no equals IMO.

DaaB wrote:Although Bramling Cross is classed as an aroma hop in the same way Goldings and Fuggles are, like all aroma hops it can also be used as a bittering hop. Dave Line uses it in several of his recipes including his 6X recipe (which i've done recently).
How did the 6X turn out DaaB?That was always a favourite drink when going into Oxford on nights out(many moons ago!!)

Wez!

What's the latest on the dry-hopped Eastern?

Hope it went well. Have you had a wee taster recently, or are you still planning on waiting until June?

I've had a half pint taster and am very impressed, will definately do this with Easterns again, really gives a good floral aroma nice and tangy too :D i'd reccomend trying this to anyone who likes Badger style beers. Think that this will be on my regular brew list. Trying my first full AG tomorrow though and sticking with the floral theme and doing an Elderflower Ale. As for whether the Easterns lasts till June....I've had two visits by the 'beer fairies' lately so it may have to come in to play sooner than i thought, probably early May.
