Kits discrepency

I strongly agree with DaaB's point on safety and so will qualify my figure of 10g priming sugar per litre.
I only add this sort of dosage to my kit beers that use 1Kg of sugar, normally I subtract my priming sugar from the quoted figure and I will only use PET bottles. If I ever used glass bottles then the maximum primer would be 5g per litre, even less if I were ever to mash a beer. Thanks for pointing this out DaaB.

PET bottles are a different beast, they'll take much higher pressures than glass bottles, although someone on another forum wanted to point out the dangers of pet bottles telling of how he unscrewed the lid with his teeth and the pressure shot the cap off like a bullet down his throat...hmmm I wonder if that one could have been avoided

Just done the sums.

Aren't home brewing shop web sites awful on details. None of them give the weight of the kit.

40 Pints:
If it is a 3 kg kit, it will produce an O.G. of 1040 at five gallons (22.7 litres).
3.6 Kg kit = 1048 @ 22.7 litres.

At 36 Pints:
3 kg kit = 1044 @ 20.46 litres
3.6 kg kit = 1053 @20.46 litres
