I am with DaaB on this one. Most ales around 4 to 5 %abv. But a clean crisp Barley Wine is heavy enough to sup and get that rosey glow your whilst listening to Helen Mirram after Christmas Dinner.

ok, so ive joined the 'what stout' debate a bit late, but however, ive had some cracking successes recently and ill share the best with you if you like.

Its a cheapo kit, Youngs Harvest Stout, with 1kg of Dark spray malt and Nottingham yeast, i also added 30g of Fuggles to about 2-3 pints of water and boiled it for 10 mins, then added this to the kit. After fermenting for about 8 days i then barreled it with 80g of Muscavado sugar.

I wasnt expecting much as it was only a cheap kit, however its a real cracker. Coming in at 5.2% it has a realy deep rich flavour and one could be mistaken into thinking your drinking a quality stout its that rounded and full bodied.

I have now found a stout recipe that i can rely on and will not be looking back.

Hope you have fun whatever you brew
