It's arrived! It's arrived!
I am about to decant the mix into the keg and when trying to fit the long flexible tube to the siphon proper (rigid pipe with anti-sediment device on the bottom, I found that the tube is the same size as the pipe and therefore it won't fit.
Has anyone else had this happen? I tried heating the tube up but no help.

either try puttingt the end in a cup of boiling water then fitting it when it goes really soft or you'll just have to use the pipe without the end on, just be carefull that you keep it just below the top of the wort. youll have bulging shoulders by the end of it at least.
i wouldnt worry about hydrometer readings to much , i started to fuss about them then stopped doing it altogether , my beer has always tasted good (ish) and has always had plenty of alcohol in it , if its been fermenting for ten days it should be ready (now ive said that my keg will explode
)
good luck

It's arrived! The tasting!
Hi all, been a while since i put the brew into the keg, where it's been for two weeks. Had to have a little taste and have to say it is gorgeous!
However, I should like your opinion on the colouring, so here are three photographs - I wasn't sure how to take the pics, so they are with varying amounts of flash or no flash.
What you think of this, or it is academic as the beer taste nice?

Now, for what it's worth, I have just checked the SG of this sample and I think it reads as 1018. You might remember that the other earlier readings I took were about 1020, and nowhere near the 1014 that I think it should have been before kegging.
So is this an indicator of the alcohol content? If so, could it be that this brew looks like beer, tastes like beer but ISN'T beer? Arghhhhh...

Well it's probably about time to draw this thread to a close, as I think the next brew is going to be the main thing for me to concentrate on (apart from imbibing this one!)
Thanks especially Daab for your help, and in the last reply where I feel confident that I have actually made beer! It really does remind me of some of those real ales down the pub that I coul ddrink pint after pint of - they showed a similar colour, not quite clear, and very malty. In addition, they weren't fizzy, as such and nor os this one - when I poured that glass you see above, there was just a pleasing foaming on the head, which dissapated after a short time to leav e a flat-ish drink that i am pretty proud of.
The next brew? Well I haven't looked that far ahead, not in practical terms. I am often left wondering what we could do with our old banana skins and the like, and I think ultimately, or as ultimately as I can think of, I would like to make something doing rather more than just sterilising the kit, adding the malt, followed by the yeast and then taking SG measurements.
That's not complaining about this kit - it's worked out and i have a nice pile of beer to admire.
Now, will it last to Christmas?...
