I started my Brupaks Scammonden Dark on Saturday the 5th of Jan, I brewed it 1 gallon short to just 4 gallons instead of 5 and I also added 200g of Muscavado Sugar hoping to get a strong slightly sweet beer similar to Mcewans Champion, the OG was 1.053.
It was bubbling away for the first 7 days at which point it was at 1.022 but then seemed to slow right down and was only bubbling about once every 5 minutes so I gave it a gentle stir and it became more active again and dropped to 1.019 by Tuesday morning. It then seemed to have stopped again so I gave it another gentle stir but I checked it again this morning and it is still on 1.019 so seems to have finished.
I would have expected the standard kit to start at 1.040 and finish at about 1.010 which would have given 4.5% and it gone from 1.053 to 1.019 which is 5.2%. Considering I added the sugar and made up to 4 gallons instead of 5 would you say its properly finished or has it stuck?
I tasted it when I tested it and it tastes very nice and not really too sweet or anything.
Opinions please :?:
OK with a landslide victory of 4 votes to 0 I have kegged this beer. Small mishap though, I connected the tap to the inlet side of the cornie without thinking and the first pint or so fell into the cornie from a height so would have gotten quite aerated. I stopped it as soon as I realised and reconnected to the outlet side. I hope this doesn't effect it to badly. This one is a dark beer so it covers some flavours but I think I still detected a slight twang so next brew will be made with bottled water. I am still hoping its something that mellows out but if not Its worth the extra fiver if it gets rid of that taste.
