out-date-kit

Post by incapete » Fri Jan 18, 2008 9:22 pm

I've been given an old Munton's kit from a person from freecycle along with a bunch of other brewing bits and pieces but it's well past it's date. I've got other yeast that I can use instead of the stuff in the kit but is that all I need to worry about? Do I need to alter my brew technique to cope with the old can?

Cheers!
Pete

I got an old kit last week with a King Keg Bottom Tap and an FV for a tenner.

I made up the can as usual but the yeast (made up as a starter) was a goner. Just replaced it with a Safale S04 and it worked a treat.

Should be ready to keg up this weekend.

Should be fine, just go for it. At the end of the day canned goods have been knowns to last decades. If the can is not damaged or swelled then it shouldn't be a problem but you might boil it just in case, this might drive off some flavour though.

My local HBS sometimes gives me free kits that have gone past their sell-by. I've always replaced the yeast and never had a problem. Give it a go 8)

All sounds fine - I've got Gervin Ale yeast which I've been happy with before so I'll use that. First time I've tried Muntons... just as well I'm replacing the yeast since I've heard of kits "doing a Muntons".
I like well hopped beer so I might add some extra into the boil to replace any aroma I lose.

Thanks guys!
Pete
