exploding airlock

Post by mollsdad21 » Tue Jan 29, 2008 9:52 pm

Evening All,

Started a brew on Sunday, word for word instruction wise as this is my first attempt on my own.
All was fine last night blooping away like mad through the airlock.
Today it was still blooping, but the lid on the fermentation barrel had risen like a baloon and was quite round although still locked down.
Checking it tonight when ive come home from work, it looks like there has been a massive push of pressure through the airlock, blowing the bit of water in there and a tonne of gunk through it coating it and the lid in brown gunk.
Ive checked with my dad who has been making home brew for years and has never had this happen to him before.
Can someone please help me by telling my why it has done this, or what may have caused it ?
I look forward to hearing your suggestions.

Paul

Hi mollsdad21 and welcome. Sounds like you've over filled your fermenter or maybe used a drill + whisk to stir the wort which gives a huge head...

I take it you are using a standard 5 gallon fermenter?

a (pretend) quid says your kit was a dark one. stouts are famous for their unruliness...

That pic so makes me want to make a nice stout.

I'm getting bored of this fizzy stuff I keep making.
