its great, i have my first turbo cider batch to take me through half term and the beer should be conditioned in time for the easter break.

It take the edge of all the delays that kept me from having anything ready for christmas and new years.

viva la brew

well the head on this brew is pushing against the lid and the liquid is around the 23 litre mark... my yeast is obviously a lot more lively than my friends which has about an inch of head.

Odd question is fermentation noticibaly exothermic as a reaction as out hot water cupboard is usually 18 degrees and now its at 20 degrees... sure i used a bit more hot water than normal in sanitising etc but can't work out why the room is warmer than normal 24 hours on.

excellent, its not just my mind playing tricks on me.

Maybe its more noticable because we have two fermenters and my experimental vessel (water dispenser bottle) all in one small room with the immersion heater.

thanks for the information DaaB

Ah, remembering back in the days when I first started out, a Geordie kit and a cheap way to get smashed! Gotta love university.

25 and a classroom assistant... was a student, hope to be one again when i can find something more interesting but right now alcohol production is the education i am interested in.

I thought formal education was important right up until i was 16 but by then i had discovered drinking... as homer says {paraphrase} beer is the answer to, and the cause of most problems.

p.s. wish i had homebrewed in Uni... although sanitary conditions were not easily available in our house

our beer room is 18 degrees most of the time and sometimes creeps up to twenty.
Our beers seem to be moving along a little slowly... this is not a worry for me, an extra week in the fermentor just gives me more time to sort out the old king kegs i've recieved.
At 18 degrees how long a ferment should we expect?
(beyond the 10 - 14 days i had planned)

You've got problems if you're making enough to need a large bath as a fermenter!

Now don't laugh... I've seen it done - a chap doing a beer kit in the bath, using hot water out of the tap. The plughole came in handy... #-o

Funny, I mentioned to my Dad that I was starting to brew my own beer and he said he remembered his Dad and Uncles brewing beer in a bathtub, He said they used to sell special lids for the bathtubs.

Not exactly. Unsurprisingly, it was not fit for human consumption.

I know it all sounds a bit far fetched, but I kid you not.

Yes, but I bet they washed the bath out first.

as this is my first beer kit, i am unsure what gravity it should get down to or at least near... will be testing Sunday so not too great an urgency on reply.

Coopers leaflet and website a little unhelpful in this area.

I used 1Kg of Geordie Beer enhancer. Assume it splits sugar and light malt about equally.
