final hydro reading

Post by stega » Tue Feb 19, 2008 1:21 pm

hi all,
quick question re hydro readings. I was looking for reading of 1014 or below but only managed to get it to 1020 on my muntons conkerwood. after following suggestions re stuck fermentation it wouldnt budge. anyway its bottled now. after priming will it ferment to correct level? is it just the danger of exploding bottles you need to worry about?
many thanks,
a newbie. :)

Hi Stega, I take it you bottled it in plastic PET bottles? 1020 is a little high but as long as the fermentation has finnished you will probably just end up with sweeter tasting/lower ABV beer.

Did you try adding more yeast/stirring the beer before bottling?

hi steve,
yes gave it a swill and added more yeast but didnt budge from 1020 reading. i`ve bottled it in glass beer bottles (used theakstons etc) with caps. when siphoned into the bottles i did "accidentally" taste it. tasted ok. little sweet but did taste like beer!
i`ll give it a good 3 weeks to mature at least. out of interest will take a reading when in the glass. if fermentation hadnt finished would it not just carry on in the bottles? also think i read somewhere that muntons brews are often higher than they say on the box. dont know if true.

My Woodfords Admirals Reserve got stuck at 1020, so I added a yeast starter, it dropped to 1014, then I added dry beer enzyme and it dropped to 1006. Then I bottled it. It might be worth having some DBE on hand if you do a Muntons/Woodfords kit agin, I know I will. If it says 4% or 4.5% on the box it's a bit disappointing when it only reaches 3%.
