Water Prep

Post by Redbloke » Thu Feb 28, 2008 4:05 pm

Hi All :)

This might sound a dumb question
I'm fully aware of the importance of water preparation in full mash brewing, but what is the best preparation for kit beer water? Is just the campden tablet treatment enough, or should the water ph values be adjusted? :?

Cheers

I just use half a Campden tablet. Then a little bit more for luck which I pretend to myself I haven't used.

BUT I'm sure I really should check the hardness and acidity and all that stuff reeaally.

If you're treating the water can you put the campden tablet into the wort as you're adding water/mixing it up/aerating, or do you have to have all the water pre-treated first?

My first 2 kits I haven't bothered and the Wherry tastes great anyway, but I got some tablets for when Ben brings his AG kit over...

I generally heat up a little of the water in a pan and dissolve the crushed tablet into that and return the FV containing the water. I usually let this sit for 30 mins before adding the mixture from the tins as it takes time for the campden tablet to 'do its stuff'.

Treat the water before mixing with the concentrate, you might have got away with it becuause you water have low chlorine levels. Better safe than sorry though.
