My First Brew Day! Part 1.

Sat 8th July 8:00pm 1. Yeast Starter:
I pretty much followed Daab’s instructions for this (If I haven’t said it already thanks Daab)

Got all the equipment needed together and started by cleaning everything in a weak solution of soda crystals (Weak because everything is pretty new or has already been cleaned so nothing is very dirty!) in hot water. Then everything got a 20min soak in thin bleach solution 3ml per Ltr cold water, followed by a rinse in a sodium metabisulphate solution. I’m sure I read on here some where that sodium met did not need to be rinsed off, how ever due to the very small volumes of liquid involved I did rinse containers with freshly boiled water.

I put 50ml of boiled water into a jug and covered with a plate while it was cooling down to prevent any nasties getting in. once it was about 25C I sprinkled the yeast into the water (This was the yeast from the brupaks kit, I did have a pack of safale ale yeast on standby!) then recovered with the plate. I then opened a pack of muntons dark spray malt and realised I hadn’t cleaned and sterilised any tea spoons ;) (but I had remembered to sterilise the scissors! ) so instead of putting 4 tsp’s into a jug with ¼ pint of cold water I Guessed. It didn’t seam to want to dissolve very well (not sure if my guess was maybe a bit heavy on the malt? Or scissors aren’t designed for stirring :P !) After topping up with ¾ pint of boiling water it dissolved nicely. I cover this with a plate placed it into a bowl of cold water, when the temp was about 30 degrees I checked the yeast was foaming nicely and it was, I suddenly realised I had missed a step I didn’t bring the malt back to the boil <_< so I quickly put it in the microwave until it boiled well and then took it out and put it back in the bowl of cold water to cool down again! Checking the time I realised the yeast had been rehydrating already for 25mins and I was concerned that with out any sugar to munch I didn't know how long it would last in just water, so I looked for ice to speed up the cool down. Damn no ice, right desperate measures I put frozen peas and Brussel sprouts into the bowl of water which helped loads although SWMBO was not best pleased when she came in to make a cup of tea and I told her she couldn’t and that she needed to go shopping as we needed some more peas and sprouts  ! After 40 mins of the yeast re-hydrating the malt solution was finally cool enough so I mixed the two together and placed in a small water bottle. I waited for bubbles but after a few minutes I got bored and went to bed as it was late! Next morning BUBBLES and opening the lid a little CO2 hissed out, looking good.

Stay tuned for Part 2 Liquor trouble.

Maybe that hissing sound was something altogether more sinister...

I'm betting either:

a) Knockout gas attack by the CIA
b) A kitchen full of vipers
c) He is a pantomime villain and had to leave the stage under a barrage of abuse
