Wilkinsons winding down Homebrew

Post by jogger321 » Wed Jul 19, 2006 9:26 pm

Well as had been pointed out before they could pull out of home brew at the drop of a hat..looks like they are gradually winding it down..Went into my local one today (for non brewing stuff) and noticed they have moved it and now only sell a fraction of the range they used to...No Barrels, fermenting bins, or decent kits anymore..only the cheap end of the market..No doubt it is only a matter of time before they pack it in altogether...Thats why we need to support our home brew shops and not the multiples

...and my oh my what a wonderful job you are doing "Youngs homebrew" wholesaler...first screwing up on Sodastream with Wilkos and now this!! ...what a wonderful way to run a business

mmmm,

I know a bit about the Wilkinson's outfit. You may have noticed that their product range has changed quite a bit over the last 30 months or so and will continue to "evolve" along the lines of market trend and customer needs.

Sadly their commintment to Homebrew has reduced and I think you are right, it is likely to dissappear altogether in the not too distant future. This could be a two edged sword - perhaps they are not selling much because most people do support their specialist supplier, be it in person or via mail order. There is no "witch hunt" against home brewing just likely that better selling lines will push it out.

I'm dead lucky that despite living in quite a small town we have a specialist homebrew shop in the high street so not only do I have a good range of products available off the shelf I have a great source of information and advice freely aailable. Ever tried asking the girl on the Wilko's check out if secondary fermenting is a good idea for a Woodforde's kit?

Get the campaign running - support your LHBS, you'll miss them when they are gone!

Just to save someone else a wasted trip: the Wilcos in Stratford (London) has stopped selling HB stuff completely. Not even a lousy kit to be seen.

I have 3 wilkos within a 6 mile radius of my house which currently all stock a decent range of HB equipment, fermenters, budget barrels (£15 each), camden tablets, syponing tubes, Wherry etc etc and I would be very sorry to see that die out. Obviously if they don't sell much of the stuff then you can't blame then.
My nearest HB shop is about 20 miles away and rather expensive. It is cheaper for me to order, say 3 kits online from another place & pay postage than buy the equivalent from the local shop.

No Wilkos near me and a very poorly stocked Home Brew shop. I only ever use the home brew store if I am desperate for something.

It is basically a cupboard in the back of an off licence which mainly sells kits and a small variety of grains/hops.

My local Wilkinsons in Bishop Auckland County Durham have Wherry and Edme in stock and the basic gear to get the kit man up and running. I have the luxury of the Hop and Grape at Darlington only 12 miles away and will deliver to me if necessary for only 2 quid....excellent value. I think it is under a fiver for anywhere in the country and their prices are very reasonable...so there you have it. If I do not get any discount on my next visit to H & G I never will!!!

Hop & Grape are a great HBS and I almost exclusively use them

Hi Davidson,

I noticed when on holiday last year there is a shop in Cardigan; Cardigan Homebrew Supplies. I believe the details are:
01239613916
33 North Road Cardigan, Dyfed, SA43 1LS
(cant find a website address for them)

Didnt actually get a chance to go in as spotted it on the Sunday evening before we left but from the window display seemed to be well stocked.
