Which sugar should I use for my first attempt?
Which sugar should I use for my first attempt?
Hi,
I got a Young's kit on cheap and this will be my first foray into brews.
The instructions recommend using brewer's sugar or if not, normal sugar.
I think I have worked out that the brewer's sugar is glucose, but my question is will it make any difference to the end product?
I'm not expecting the world's finest beer from my first kit, and not from a starter box like this, but to get something drinkable would be a good success for me.
Cheers,
Joe.
PS: Know any shops for homebrew in the west Essex area? Harlow, Epping etc?

I'd say neither ditch the sugar and instead use 1Kg of dried malt extract, it will be more expensive but it'll produce a much superior end result than anything brewed with sugar (cane sugar or brewing sugar/glucose).
Hope it turns out well for you.
PS Almost forgot the standard advice for someone doing there first brew, get yourself some campden tablets from your LHBS cut one in half, crush it and mix it into the water you are going to use for brewing before you add the kit or dried malt extract to it. It removes the chemicals (chlorine/chloroamine) that the water companies put into tap water to kill bacteria, if you don't remove these they will react with componds in your kit/malt extract and leave you with a beer that tastes of TCP (yuck).
Hope it turns out well for you.

I think boots gave up on homebrew stuff quite some time ago, as has been said you could give wilkos a go or do a quick internet search for a homebrew shop in your area or ask on here?joebongo wrote:Thanks for the tip. No mention of Campdens in the blurb!
I'm hoping the Boot's where I'm off to this afternoon will sell the required items. They used to do a little bit of brew supplies so if I'm lucky I can crack on tonight!
Joe
BTW the blurb on a beer kit is next to useless, if you follow the instructions (destructions

The good people of Jimsbeerkit will keep you on the straight and narrow though

If you read the packet of Geordie beer enhancer, it shows the ingredient list with spray malt first followed by glucose. If it works out the same as other ingredient lists on the back of foods then it's the ingredient of the greater amount first working down.
I would say it's 51% spraymalt and 49% glucose, a bargain really at three quid 30 for 1kg
Are many people on here CAMRA (KS)
I let my membership run out last year, probably join again for the magazines they send out.

My Wilkinson's (Colchester) has dropped the Home Brew section; "no call for it".Doughboy wrote:Hi,
Id also add, that if you have access to a Wilkinson store in your area, this will probably do homebrew supplies although limited....its a good start.
Hope yer 1st brew go's well...

I'm calling for it!
Like Doughboy, all the best for the first brew - I've not looked back!
That's a legal requirement.shepp wrote:If you read the packet of Geordie beer enhancer, it shows the ingredient list with spray malt first followed by glucose. If it works out the same as other ingredient lists on the back of foods then it's the ingredient of the greater amount first working down.
I think your guess of 51/49 won't be far off.
If you order on-line from Wilkinsons PLUS you can have stuff delivered to your local Wilko's without any delivery chargePMH0810 wrote:My Wilkinson's (Colchester) has dropped the Home Brew section; "no call for it".Doughboy wrote:Hi,

Joe, if you want some great tips on making kits then have a look at Daab's excellent instructional site - http://www.18000feet.com/how/kittips.htm
Thanks for the pointers chaps.
I haven't done it yet as I want to put together a Noddy style step be step guide that incorporates the printed instructions and the wisdom of the brewers here and on the other sites with tips and tricks.
Should have a 1st draft (no pun intended) mid next week cos of work. When reviewed and agreed by you lot, I'll get it attached or mirrored somewhere and then, and only then, will I commence Operation Firstbrew.
Cheers,
Joe
