over carbonation

Post by gullarm » Mon Apr 14, 2008 5:17 pm

I have primed my lager and its a bit to fizzy when opening the bottles.

I dont understand what went wrong as I have done the same procedure 4 times now.

Is there anyway to lower the pressure.

The beer wasnt esp cold - but I opened another bottle from the prev brew and that was correctly carbonated, they werent esp cold , been outside all day say 8 deg C.

I have tried opening the top very slowing to release the pressure but the yeast cake lifts and dissapates into the beer, so cloudy beer?

Perhaps the fermentation wasn't quite finished when you bottled it, I've had a bitter that over-carbonated, I reckon that was the cause of my problem...

You could try putting them in the fridge overnight, that's what I try to do with lagers anyway as I carbonate them quite heavily and they are very lively.

You didn't mention whether you used PET or glass bottles. If it's in PETs, there's nothing to stop you releasing the excess pressure from the bottles and closing them again, obviously you will have to wait for everything to settle again.
