Does this seem right?

Hey guys

Yesterday I did a Brupaks Brewers Choice extra special bitter kit and used choice 3 (a tin of pale malt extract). My OG was 1058 at 26C, (so 1060, adjusted). Does this seem ok? Brupaks state a range of 4.5-4.8% ABV but assuming I get down to at least 1014, this brew is going to be over 6%.

Should the FG be a lot higher because of using the LME?

Cheers

Thanks DaaB,

It was a Brupaks 1.5Kg Premium Grade Pale Malt Extract and then the 1Kg of DME that comes with the kit

It said on the instructions that this choice would give the closest results to a pub ale. Damn, I should have checked here first - could have got DME at half the price!

I made it up to 5 Gallons. I checked with 2 hydrometers and both gave the same reading.

Off topic, but I followed your guide on making a yeast starter and swapped out the supplied yeast for S04 and man what a difference! It had a Krausen within 8 hours and its fermenting like mad at the moment.

Thanks again

The big bag of dried extract that comes with the Brewer's Choice ESB is quite a bit bigger than 1Kg, I'd say 2Kg as the net weight of the kit is 2110g.

Did you receive an additional 1Kg of DME with the kit, in addition to the big bag inside the kit? If you added both, that could account for your high SG... the 1.5Kg can is intended as a substitute for the 1Kg DME.

I seem to remember I had a SG just over 1050 with 1Kg of spraymalt added, it is quite strong.

Sorry, I meant the 2Kg bag that came with the kit. Does LME generally give a higher OG than DME?

sparky Paul, do you remember roughly what you got the FG down to?

Cheers

IIRC, about 1013, which isn't bad for a strongish beer.

Using 1.5Kg of LME should give a slightly higher SG, target 1052-54 as opposed to 1048-50, according to the Brupaks instructions.

intruiging: I did a Brewer's Choice Old Ale recently, details on another thread, and got an OG of 1066! with option 2. Anyone else getting high OGs with these kits atm? Could it be more than coincidence?
