Shed Temp

Post by PMH0810 » Thu May 08, 2008 6:44 pm

My beer storage outhouse has a concrete roof and, foolishly, I thought this'd keep the building cool.

Doesn't.

What temp does it have to reach before it adversely affects my conditioned/conditioning bottled/kegged beers?

Don't have a lot of cash - suggestions on a reasonable temp and cheap kit to get it there?

Id like to know a rough answer here as my shed gets warm from about now through to sept\oct...
I would personally not like to go much above 24\25 degrees C, which is hotter in my shed at mo!..
Using a temp controller wired up to heater for cold and fan for warm wouldnt really do much as its blowing air around - im considering trying a water filled FV and sitting it in various levels of cold water in a larger container to try and stabilise the temp but this sounds unlikely to produce even temps...
Not sure of a cheap answer

I do know however my mexican cerveza with 1kg brewing sugar & 500g DME is ready for barreling tonight so.......if it does stay hot, ill have something to keep me going shortly

Same here - I'm a new brewer and the shed has suddenly warmed up. Not sure how to cold condition - will beer clear?

Worried :?

A cheap method of cooling, is to stand the FV in a shallow 'dish' filled with water, wrap a wet towel around the FV so that it sits in the water, and set a desk fan to blow on it. . . . . Replace the water as needed, you can get a considerable cooling effect, certainly enough to keep things 'sensible' during this hot weather . . . cold conditioning then you are looking at some sort of modified fridge or Fermenchiller setup.

Am using the shed for storage of ready to drink beers and the conditioning of recently bottled stuff (after all, it was the coldest place at home).

Will have to move the beer that's clearing - that's a given. What about the stuff that's ready to drink?

Last night 19:00 last night the shed was at 26 deg C, 07:00 it was at 16?

Was saving my pennies for ag set up - may now need to buy another fridge instead - can you set these at the 10-15 deg C range?

Don't worry, this is Brittain, it'll be snowing the day after tommorow, a fact amazingly missed by useless and incompetent weather forcasting service. Failing that get onto freecycle and get an old but working fridge for nothing :D
