Won't clear using brewing sugar

Post by Alky » Mon May 12, 2008 8:07 pm

Hi, A while back I asked if it would be ok to use brewing sugar with Youngs kits and the general response was yes with adjustments which I did using 1.3 kg per 40 pint kit.

I've now made around 4 kits up using the sugar but the brew refuses to totally clear even after a month and adding finings. Bottles or barrels are the same. It is clear but nowhere near as clear as when I was using bagged sugar. Is this normal when using brewing sugar?

The taste is absolutely fine and the end gravity is around 1 or 2 (really low).

All water is boiled (to sterilise it and remove Chlorine) and equipment sterilising is scrupulous. Brewing is done at around 24 degrees for 7 days or so and then storage is at around 20 degrees.

Is this likely to be a result of the brewing sugar or should I look elsewhere for the problem?

The only difference that I have noticed in the brewing is with the sludge at the bottom of the brewing bucket. It seems very loose.

Thanks for any ideas - Dave
