Lager type summer beer without lager yeast?

Post by drbell » Tue May 20, 2008 6:56 pm

I ideally wanted to do a lager as my next brew, to offer a nice summer alternative to the stout, IPA and bitter(soon) that I have available to me. However, I dont have conditions to ensure a sub 18 degrees fermentation, so I suspect producing a quality lager is out.

If anyone can suggest a nice light ale, or a kit which has a lager quality to it (but actually with some flavour ;-) ) I would be very grateful.

My FV is currently empty so it won't be long before I purchase and kick it off.

I've just done a Coopers Lager kit with 50% brewing sugar and 50% light DME it was fermented at the same temperture I would ferment any other beer somewhere between 70 and 80 F. It's turned out very well and would make an ideal light summer drink.

Woodforde's Great Eastern Ale might be worth a look.

Here's the write up for it:

Great Eastern is a delicious, full flavoured, golden ale made with a blend of quality pale and lager malts. Originally brewed by Woodforde's to commemorate 150 years of The Great Eastern Railway in Norfolk, the beer has remained a firm favourite to both lager and bitter drinkers alike. Cask conditioned Great Eastern Ale is heralded by experts for its rare ability to retain the flavour of malt and hops and yet remains "quaffable" to the very last. This is an ideal session beer.

Great Eastern Ale is a lovely light summer ale. Beautiful when slightly chilled. Well worth a go!
