Freezing Malt Extract

Post by Duncndisorderly » Thu Jun 05, 2008 2:40 pm

I was just wondering, can i freeze half a can of unused malt extract after i make up a small 2 gallon batch or should i just stop being so tight and make a 5 gallon batch.
Also if i do freeze the malt extract should i freeze the entire tin first then just cut it into 2 pieces, or indeed 5 pieces and make five mini brews?

No idea about freezing it and if it could affect it.

It seems a waste of time doing such small amounts though, because for all the time fermenting/maturing, it'll be drunk so quick and you'll have to start again, for another tiny batch!

freezing shouldnt affect it. i wouldnt leave it in the can when freezing though, that might cause problems.

you would be leaving yourself more open to "nasties" getting into it when defrosting it.

but, yes, you should stop being so tight

I've frozen small aliquots for making up starters - just put a bit (4 tbsp) into a very small plastic food container with lid. No probs.

I tried freezing it. I was hoping it would end up as a solid frozen chunk similar to ice but it dosn't. It goes more solid than at ambient temp but it's still a sticky lump which is difficult to handle.
