im just about to put my cidar into a barrel. is it the same as beer for priming, 50g of sugar.

All depends on how fizzy you want the cider to be!If you like your cider to have more carbonation(like sold in pubs) then I would use about 100g of sugar.Is it a 5 gallon batch?If not then scale it to your needs.
If you like with less fizz then 50g should be ok.
Have you got a means of re-gassing the barrel(s30 canister or co2 bulbs)?, as you may not have enough co2 to serve all the contents without some more gas being added.
