Naive Q, LME for sugar ratio

Post by JayBee » Tue Jun 10, 2008 12:30 pm

I`m sure the answer`s on here somewhere but I cant find it. I want to replace the sugar in my kit for light DME and feel a bit dumb asking but is 500 grams of sugar swapped for 500 grams of DME ( the kit makes 12 litres ) or is the ratio different?
Thanks for your patience.
Quite easy to get hooked on this brewing game isnt it.

I'll have a stab.

1 pound of DME disolved in 1 gallon of water yields a gravity of about 1.040 (40 points per gallon, ppg).

Brewers sugar (also called corn sugar, or dextrose) yields about 42 points.

Cane suger (ie: a bag of Tate & Lyle) yields about 46.

So assuming the sugar is brewers sugar,

500 * 42/40 - means you should add 525g of DME.

Having thought about this (ie: consulted a book) I think you also need to consider the water content of the DME and also the fact that it's less fermentable.

Brewers sugar:
500g
100% fermentable
92% solids

DME:
??
75%
90%

?? = (500*100*90)/(75*80)
You need: 681g
