Too much pressure.

Its my EDME STOUT.
I presume i have too much pressure in the keg. Wondered why it rocked around, then i saw the bulge.

I used Billington's Natural golden granulated unrefined cane sugar & didnt over prime it.
Could having it in the warmth conditioning for an extra 4 days have made this happen?

Is it likely to explode? hahahaha!!!

Also i was thinking, if i put this drum in the shed & fill it with cold water then drop in what evers conditioning it should cool it better than just leaving it in the shade. Good idea?

My Hambleton one started to have a very slow leak around the tap when it was overpressurised and a quick release of some pressure soon stopped it. I did have a cap that split before too at lower pressure. Neither did what yours did though!!!

Cornies look very appealing at times like these...

yeah but cornies are at the very bottom of the affordability list. Miss Ant would spit her dummy out if i bought a few of them seeing as i have 3 20quid plastic kegs all ready.

I wonder why the release valve didn't allow the c02 to escape?

I wouldn't submerge a plastic barrel in water if I were you. It might stop beer getting out but the risk of allowing infection in would be huge

Well done - I was umming and aahing about buying a cheaper keg (currently using a beersphere); your thread has put me straight on that, thank you!

Same here, there's been a few threads on here recently that have totally put me off these cheaper youngs kegs :(

Have you thought about complaining about them and getting a refund, £60 would go quite a way to a cornie setup :D

Just open the top and release abit of pressure. It musn't have finished fermenting out before you barreled it.

It also seems that the valves in these barrels can be faulty in quite high numbers

i've got one of the cheap youngs barrels and had no problems with it, but i would be definetly taking it back if it looked like that as obviously the valve hasnt done it's job therefore not fit for purpose.

The FG was same from day5 onwards. Was in FV for total of 11 days.
I would have expected it to have finished fermentation. Im convinced it was.

Would i be best putting the stuff in 2L pets?

If you haven't already let the pressure out, the best way is to lay the barrel on its side with the tap uppermost and open the tap to let the pressure out.

Releasing the lid will be more difficult, as the thread will be under tension from the pressure, and also you'll have less control over how much gas you let out (and therefore how much air you might let in).

I've had this very same expirience with a budget barrel, don't think it was a Youngs though.

For some reason the rubber on the S30 pressure release valve didn't work. I found the easiest way to release excessive build up of gas was to pinch the rubber either side of the hole in the valve. Mine eventually returned to shape.

Atleast from now on you know what to look out for.

Run for it

Train a monkey to open valves quickly and send him towards it

Monkey though? Surely that's where SWMBO should step up?
