Beer almost flat help!

Post by likesbeer » Sun Jun 15, 2008 6:43 pm

I've been brewing a John Bull Porter fermenting went well dropped from 1042 to 1014 advice from others here that seems normal.
Transfered to barrel after 10 days (constant reading) with about 90gram ordinary sugar as didnt have anything else to hand. Advice from others here almost anything could be used for priming.

Two or three weeks later I have enjoyed a couple of pints yesterday its very good. However, its almost flat. It did produce CO2 in the second ferment as a little fiddle with the safety rubber on the safety valve let some gas out. I dont think it has leaked either.
But after only a couple of glasses the CO2 has gone it came out initially like a jet washer but seems to have all gone.

Now I'm worried that the beer will go off.
Any suggestions advice would be appreciated, or shouldnt I worry.
I have an S30 so can top up while drinking.

You say you have an S30 system - did you use it? Often if there isn't much headspace in the barrel you can only pull a couple of pints before the pressure is gone, then the beer goes flat if you don't top up with CO2.

Another possibility is that the beer wasn't cool enough to absorb the CO2, so that all the gas went into the space above the beer. It needs to be at about 16C or less (preferably below 14C) to effectively absorb CO2.

It won't go off as long as you don't let the pressure go down completely with the result that air bubbles in through the tap when you try to pour.

Jim many thanks for the advice, there was a reasonable headspace a couple of inches. Its a Hambledon barrell with a 40 pint brew. However, I would go with the not cold enough as didnt really have anywhere cool to put it and the last couple of weeks have been rather warm.
I have topped up with CO2 as soon as I realised the presure had pretty much gone, I will continue to do so. This was the first couple of pints to come off so I dont think its sat with no pressure.
