Priming bottles

Post by big_treacle » Sun Jun 22, 2008 1:51 pm

I'm hoping to bottle my latest batch tomorrow but need some guidance with priming. I don't have a second bucket to prime, so last time I simply added half a tspn to each bottle which worked fine. This time I still have most of the bag of brewers sugar left but I'm concerned about any nasties that might have got in. Is it possible to make a sugar/boiling water solution that can be added straight to the bottles? Does anyone do this and what is the best technique?
Thanks

Sounds fine. The way I do it is to boil up 50-80g of sugar in half a pint of water. Once cool I add it carefully (avoiding sploshing) to the FV and let it rest for an hour or so to disperse the sugar amongst the brew. That way each bottle should have about the same sugar in.

Hi

Yes - I do this:

I Make up a solution so that I have 5ml per 500ml bottle (weigh required priming sugar into jug, top up to require level with boiling water, zap in microwave for a minute or two). Typically I make 250ml.

I have a large syringe (20cc) which I fill up and use to squirt 5ml into each bottle, then I fill as per normal. This literally takes a few minutes as each fill does 4 bottles...

I have tried the in the FV bucket method, but I guess I am not a very careful stirrer (enthusiastic? ) and ended up bottling some yeast soup. If you have another container you can alway put your prime solution in this, then rack your beer off into the second bucket.

OK, I'll have a look around for a big syringe today. If no luck, then I'll attempt the pour into FV & gentle stir method :)

I got a 5ml syringe from the chemists & it worked a treat - much tidier than tipping half a tsp full of sugar down a funnel & I would guess that it mixes into the beer better too. Now to see how the beer turns out (tasted fine straight from the FV)
