adding sugars into FV

Post by daveyk » Wed Jun 25, 2008 1:09 pm

Hi All,

Just a quick one, (I hope).

I'm about to bottle the Muntons Cont. Pils. In the absence of a spare bottling bucket, I see that I have two options for adding the sugar.

1) put sugar into each bottle prior to filling.
2) put total amount of sugar into solution and adding this to the FV.

I'm favouring option 2 just for the easier method and lower fiddling factor. So onto the question.

Can i just add the solution and leave for half to an hour to distibute or should i stir this too? I'm concerned about stiring in the crud on the top and rousing the yeast too much.

Any thoughts?

Oh yes and how much sugar? I was thinking 80g.... is this OK for 40(ish) pints of Pils. or a little more? or less?

Prime the sugar into the bottles. IMO its safer. You might oxidize the brew when stirring it in.

Get a funnel & drop in a level tea spoon of the sugar per bottle. less messy. Do it sober as well coz by the time you get to bottle 20 you'll be dropping in heaped spoon fulls. Or is that just me???

LOL no, that happens to me as well.

Yes I think it might be safer.... if i'm going down that route though, I might make up the solution to a know concentration and syringe it into the bottles as some of them are different sizes.

The last brew I did I put the priming sugars in the FV as per Method 1 on Daab's bottling howto http://www.18000feet.com/how/bottling.htm
The beer is drinking fine now, and I found it easier than priming each bottle.

Yes it certainly sounds easier....

How much sugar would people use for this brew?

Iirc it's roughly half a teaspoon per pint of Ale and around one teaspoon per pint of lager. It's you choice in the end, of course, you could always do a few with 1/2 a few with 1 and a few with 1 + 1/2 and label the different bottles. That way you'll know which you like best for next time.

The Deed is done!

Well the deed is done, went for the option of boiling the sugars, letting them cool then adding to the FV. A gentle stir then allowing to sit for 1/2 hour.

Was a bit of a chew on waiting for a) the sugar to cool, and b) the FV to rest BUT much easier when it came to bottling. I was also using some bottles of different sizes so made it much easier at this point.

Well lets wait and see how the brew turns out.

Need to bottle the next brew in a couple of days but at least i now have a spare FV which i can use to mix the sugars / brew in.... might give that method a go. Especially as i can use the afore mentioned FV to clean LOADS of bottles in.
