why does everyone seem to use coloured bottles and not clear ones

Lightstrike will ruin your beer. It will introduce stale flavours. Clear glass does not protect against lightstrike, brown glass will.

Agreed, however I've used clear Newcastle Brown bottles with no probs.
I don't have too many but I always bottle at least one of each batch in one so I can see how it is clearing.
Just store them in a cool dark place.
