How long is too long

Post by daveyk » Sun Jun 29, 2008 8:24 pm

Hi All,

I've been brewing up my Linthwaite Light kit over the last couple of weeks.

All seems to be well but I'm a little concerned over how long it is taking.

The gravity started at 1040 and was dropping as expected and reached 1014 on day 12 of the brew. I checked again on day 15 and there was no change.

I roused the yeast in the hope of reaching the target of 1010. We are now on day 18 and at 1012.

I'm thinking give it another day or so and see if it is now stable if so bottle it... what does everyone else think. This is my second brew from the pride of yorkshire series and that one ended at 1012 also... is this common for these kits? Should I be adding any yeast vit to help.

the temp of the brew has been prety much around 19 degs C so i would expect it to take a little longer but i'm getting a little concerned after 18days.

Any advice appreciated.

Dave.

I'd get it off the yeast pretty soon, 10 days to 2 weeks seems to be the norm, and you can go longer.

But in future I would be thinking remedial action before day 10. These kits often fail to reach the FG, but 1012 is a very respectable finish, and to delay you just risk yeast lysis flavours (you may like marmite beer), infection etc....

well thats it.

OK, thanks for the advice.... i was suprised myself at how long it had been left. Anyway it's now in the bottles and having a sit upstairs in the warm.....

It all seems OK at this stage. I'll let you know how it turns out.
