Black Country Bitter kits (Harris Filters own brand) ?

Post by Waffty » Mon Jun 30, 2008 3:08 pm

Hi,

Just popped into Harris homebrew (makers of Harris filters) & noticed that they sell their own beer kits under the 'banner' of Black Country bitter (mild etc). These kits are a single can or be it, they look double the size of the single can kits, so assume they 3Kg worth of extract.

When I spoke to the lady (owner ?), she advised that these kits were made for them, by Woodfords i.e I bought a Woodfords Wherry kit & she advised that they (Woodfords) made their kits for them.

So can anyone advise if they've used one of the Black Country kits, as I'm sure from memory, they were priced at £8 per kit (£7.95), as opposed to the Wharry, they I paid £15.95 for (+ she through in free pack of Beer Brite  ).

Owwww they also sell a selection of own brand 'dry' kits, based on DME which I plan to have a go at, when I get myself a boiler.

Many thanks in advance.
Darren.

Hi

Sorry - no experience with these kits - but on your other point - I doubt you need a boiler for a DME based kit.....

Hi Darren,
I think that the Harris's beer kits go under the 'banner' of Dudley and Gornal Ales and not Blackcountry Ales and I am almost positive they are a 1.8kg kit and not 3kg like you seem to think.
Must admit, these cans are bigger than some of the others and do seem good value and the lady (owner) does speak highly of them, but then again she is not going to knock her own products is she? But having said that these kits are on my list of “to try”
As for the dry kits, I think that they could be made in a large saucepan (no need for a boiler) but you’d need to seek further advice and make sure as I am a newby to this game

Just got some clarification off a friend of a friend that's brewed one of their dry kits before & he advised that they can be made in a 'large' saucepan i.e something that will safely hold 7 litres, so that's cool. Well not for me, as I'm not sure I've got anything to hold that capacity safely, so may be I need to convince the wife that I do need a boiler

Same bloke I spoke to confirmed what you're saying Dill & thinking about it they deffo weren't twice the size of a 1.5Kg can, so 1.8Kg would make perfect sense+ at £8 it's more likely to be 1.8Kg, as opposed to 3Kg.

Now the only thing I'm not sure about is the name, as I'm almost certain, that they're now call Black Country, as opposed to Dudley & Gornal Ales, which may have something to do with them being supplied by a different company or that they have links to the pub over the road, which houses the Black Country Ales microbrewery.
