To Boil or Not to Boil

Post by Bru4u » Sat Jul 05, 2008 4:19 pm

Does every one boil the largest proportion of their hopped extract of do you follow the instructions, I know for sanitary reasons it's good but are you going to make a beer more bitter by boiling the pre-hopped extract and will you loose any of the aroma as the manufacturer intended it to be.
Most of the books say to boil as much of the wort as you can.
I boil around 10 Litres and then chill with a coil before transfering to FV.
So how do you like yours or does it make any diference to flavour.
What do ya reckon, people of wisdom.

or will I just shut up and pull my finger out with the AG setup

I just boil as much as necessary. If you get a yeast starter going it will not make much difference as that will take control pretty quick. I through in a big hand of hops at the end of the boil to compensate or i fact to give some flavour.

oh yes and get finger out and get on with the ag

Thanks Daab, :D
That is the info I was after, I was more concerned with what you are doing to the flavour and aroma by boiling a Pre-hopped Extract from a kit. The next prehopped kit I won't boil.

I used those instructions from 18000 feet for that same kit with excellent results.

my next effort this morning will be a Sherwood Ale kit - Dark Oak Ale and hops come with it so I'll use the same method, however should i use some SO4 or the yeast supplied which says "John Bull dried yeast" for best results.

Job Done
Used So4 and made a yeast starter, No Boil method, wow, what a dark beauty that ale is, I'm going to add the hop pellets on day 3 of fermentation for just aroma as the destructions said, but I see the pack had a tear so I presume the hops will have staled a bit, some are in tact and some are powder in the bag.
I will order some fresh stuff tomorrow but don't know which would be best, no bittering, just aroma. I may as well be looking up a ducks arse for all I know about hop types and which is best for which purpose.
