Measuring ABV

Post by Prozac » Fri Jul 18, 2008 5:16 pm

Wouldn't mind knowing the strength of the 'Lager' I've brewed, but as I didn't take a SG reading before I added the yeast, I guess I'm goosed.

It seems reasonably strengthed.... not stoopid strong, but acceptable.

Can you measure off a hydrometer without having a Starting Gravity?

I am sure wiser heads than mine will guesstimate an SG but you'd need to list the kit used and any extra fermentables first?

Me? If my cheeks are aglow after pint 3 it's greater than 6%, if not, it's lower...

It's irrelevant really.... it certainly did the job.
Me and SWMBO got through 4L last night, though She only had 2 glasses with lime in...... so most of it must have been me, finished off with a couple of Taliskers 10yr Old :D :D :D

Both bottles were as flat as each other so I'm not hopeful for the rest of it.

:?

My John Bull Lager was as flat as the proverbial; with DaaB's help I narrowed it down to yeast too old for the job.

Finished the batch as shandy and now I check the BBE dates thoroughly - keeping a batch of yeast sachets in the fridge.

I need to get some spare yeast.... would it hurt to add a little at bottling time?
If so how much for a 40pint kit.?
I used a 2ndary FV to bottle from, and mixed 80g of Spray Malt to the beer, would have easy enough to add some more yeast then too...

I keep supply of Safale S04 in as a general backup. It comes in 11.5g packets and I add a whole packet.

following it with some 10year old Talisker....lucky man!
Talisker is a beauty, try it waith a bar of green and blacks 70% chocolate, magic!
I have started matching drinks to my chocolate addiction, western salty malts to the dark choc. The orange chocolate lends nicely to flowery spirits, metaxa or a cognac. The milk chocolate with bitters, especially hoppy ones.

can't wait for my IPA to mature enough for an excuse to tuck into a whole bar of galaxy....or will that be better with stout?
