Bottling!

Post by Curious Brew » Tue Sep 16, 2008 12:24 am

My Coopers Lager has been sat about for over two weeks now, mainly due to the bathroom being completely gutted and refitted and oak flooring being laid throughout the ground floor. Of course I forgot to factor these things in when I put the lager kit on at the end of August. D'oh!

First a quick thank you to Crown Cap for his excellent pictorial bottling guide!

Here we go:

All the bottled have been sat around in a garage for ten months plus, so I started with a good rinse out to clear the (literal) cobwebs out.

Image

Followed up with a twenty minute soak in bleach solution to sanitise...

Image

...only to be plagued by a leaky seal on my bottling bucket. A quick transfer to another bucket and a tighten sorted that out.

Image

Forty bottles sanitising happily.

Image

Meanwhile, back at the ranch... 80g of granulated sugar in 150ml of boiling water. Whack it in the microwave until bubbling nicely and then cling-film and leave.

Image

A quick measure of FG and a swift tester. Finished at 1.006 giving a nice 4.5% and tasted lovely given its raw state.

Image

No bottle tree here, so on with the manual rinsing and draining, followed up with a sodium metabisulphate dunk to get rid of the bleach.

Image

Twenty bottles down.

Image

Ready to cap.

Image

My only miscap out of thirty-eight pint bottles, plenty of spares to replace any mistakes.

Image

Thirty-eight brown bottles... in the kitchen to condition for a week prior to hiding in the garage.

Image

00:22 now, hmm... definitely going to invest in some no-rinse sanitiser and a bottle-tree for next time.

Nice work Curious-brew although I bet the Missus went light, "You better mop that floor when you're done!!" Having just bottled 30 odd pints myself I do believe a bottle tree is now an essential piece of kit to be added even before I look at another kit!!

I agree. I did 20L's yesterday too, my EDME Bitter, and did what C-B did, standing the bottles on their tops, but it's just asking for trouble, that lovely domino effect    :?

To minimize on cleaning times, and effort, I now rinse/wash each bottle when I've emptied it (or shortly there after.... if not, I add an inch of water to keep the sediment wet and easy to remove) then add an inch of sterilizing fluid ( I decant mine from the FV's into 2L bottles for exactly this purpose) seal the top with a little cling film and give the bottle a shake...... This works so far and all I need to do is give them a good dip in SF and a rinse an they are 'hot to trot'.....

I'll probably get told not to do it because of some chemical reaction with the SF and clingfilm.....

Well if it's any consolation, I did my first ever brew (Wherry) at the end of July, bottling at the beginning of August, and also forgot to sanitise the caps. However, it's turned out just fine. I'm half way through my 37-odd bottles with no ill effects at all so far. Having said that, I've been making sure I sanitise them since then! :D

At the Derby CBA competition earlier this year I saw mould on the underside of a bottle cap from an opened bottle
