Brewferms kit + yeast choice

Post by Waffty » Tue Sep 23, 2008 10:22 am

Hi,

Brewed my first Brewferms kit a few weeks ago & whilst I'm happy with the results so far (2 weeks into 8 week maturation process), I did notice, the brew does hold a fair amount of yeast, even after 2 weeks.

I've read few reviews around these kits & quite a few mention that the yeast is easily disturbed + tasks a while to drop.

So given that I'm going to make a two kit Abbey brew in the next week or so (2x 9l kits together), I was wondering if Safe04 yeast, would give me the same flavour, whilst giving me a better sedement ?

Or should I settle the yeast out with finnings or simply wait for it to drop natuarally ?

Thanks.
Darren

Safale S-04 will be very different.

I thought the Brewferms supplied yeast was a particular belgian strain that assisted in providing that style of taste.

Saf04 is more for English ale styles isn't it?

I think you're both right, I was just looking for a yeast that gave a good compact sedement, which it's fair to say, the Brewferm's doesn't.

So it looks like it's a case of being patient + using finning  .

Thanks

I believe the Brewferm yeasts are some of the better ones that come with a kit but I`m going to try this one for my Diabolo thats on order.

If you want the brew to clear, better using isinglas than to change the brewferm yeast. They sell proper strains, not generic rubbish. You're getting either an abbey or a proper ale or wheat yeast depending on what kit you're brewing.
