Coopers Real Ale

Post by Prozac » Mon Sep 29, 2008 4:22 pm

I've just bottled the Coopers Real Ale... did my normal 85g of sugar to the 2ndry FV, bottled them all and left them over night....
The 1L PET bottles are still soft this morning.... so I RTFM'd and to my surprise the Coopers instructions says to prime at a rate of 8g of sugar per litre      that's 184g for the whole 23L brew.

So, will mine a) prime, but be a bit flat, b) prime ok, or c) will it be totally flat.

I don't want flat bitter, so is it too late to do anything?

Don't expect the pressure to build up over one night it will take a week probably until you notice the difference.

I expect your priming will be enough to give it some condition but it won't be overly fizzy (read that as 'Ideal' for MY palette though).

I wouldn't personally adjust it though you 'could' (bring some sugar and water to the boil to check it's sterile & don't over do it)

Good Luck

Madbrewer is spot on, I wouldn't mess about with it now either.

8g per litre would give lots of carbonation, but in my experience you cannot open the bottles at room temperature without a sediment snowstorm. I prime my lagers at 8g/l, and they have to stand for a few hours in the fridge before opening - that's no good for bitters.

4-6g per litre is ideal for ales.
